About the Centre

A place that tells a story

The Be’er Sheva ANZAC Memorial Centre was established to commemorate the legacy of the ANZAC soldiers and to tell the story of the Battle of Be’er Sheva, which took place on 31 October 1917 as part of the First World War campaign in the Land of Israel.

The Centre presents the story of the Australian and New Zealand forces who fought in the Be’er Sheva region, with particular emphasis on the events that led to the capture of the city. The exhibition combines historical information, artefacts, documents, testimonies and audiovisual content, enabling visitors to explore the course of the battle, the individuals who took part in it, and the broader context of the campaign.

The Centre is located adjacent to the Beersheba War Cemetery, where soldiers who fell in the battles fought in the region are buried. Its proximity to the cemetery gives the Centre an additional significance as a place of remembrance, commemoration and learning.

Alongside its focus on military history, the Centre also presents the relationship that has developed over the years between Be’er Sheva, Australia and New Zealand, and the ways in which the legacy of the battle continues to form part of both local and international remembrance.

The Centre welcomes individual visitors, groups, students, soldiers, delegations and official guests from Israel and abroad, and serves as a centre for learning, remembrance and a deeper understanding of one of the defining events in the history of Be’er Sheva during the First World War.
